Tobago had Plymouth Jazz Festival, St. Lucia the St. Lucia Jazz, now it is St. James turn as Jazz holds the spotlight tomorrow night. “Jazz Beat/We Eat” is one of the signature events on the WeBeat St. James Live calendar of events at the St. James Amphitheatre, Western Main Road at 8:00 pm
The event has grown from strength to strength since it debuted in 2001. One hallmark of Jazz Beat is the deliberate promotion of local talent of world class calibre, coupled with local cuisine that’s indigenous to St. James by some of the most popular St. James food vendors, resulting in a melting pot of tastes. This year’s line-up includes the talents of Calypso King of the World, The Mighty Sparrow, Mavis John, Elan Parle, Earl Brooks Snr., and the Trinidad & Tobago Police Service Police Band.
All in all for $100, jazz enthusiasts and lovers of good music can once again look forward to a superb show.
The diverse rhythms continue on Thursday evening with 5 Ah Side Steelpan Finals and Pan Explosion. Taking centre stage are the 12 finalists who will each be performing a five minute selection composed or sung by The Mighty Sparrow (Slinger Francisco). Additionally, players can use dress and dance to enhance their presentation. Five judges, Roland Gordon, Michelle Huggins-Watts, Brian “Bean” Griffith, Kenneth Clarke and Avis Bruce, will form the adjudication panel. Winner takes home $10,000. and a Challenge Trophy.
The second half of the program will feature current Pan in the 21st Century champions, Excellent Stores Silver Stars and Tobago’s finest rbtt Redemption Soundsetters under the captaincy of Marie Toby. Admission is $60.
Friday 8th June is designated Vintage Kaiso Night will be the best to date as 11 calypso heavyweights take patrons “down memory lane”. Featured acts include The Mighty Sparrow, Rootsman, Contender, Tigress, Johnny King, Cro Cro, Crazy, Superblue, Brown Boy, Protector and Gypsy. Music accompaniment will be provided by Kelly Green & Harmony. Showtime is 8:00 pm. Admission is $100. WeBeat St. James Live 2007 culminates with a steelband parade along the Western Main Road. Starting time is 7:00 pm.
