Beenie Man Released On Bail, But Is He Been Targeted For Supporting the PNP ?

... Bennie Man claimed that he was being unfairly targeted by the authorities....

Grammy-winning dancehall star, Moses ‘Beenie Man’ Davis was yesterday released on US$21,140 bail(JA $1/5 million), hours after he surrendered to police. Bennie Man turned in himself Monday morning in the company of his attorney Garth McBean.

Beenie Man’s arrest had been ordered last week after he failed to appear in court to answer tax evasion charges. The artist turned himself in to authorities’ yesterday morning and was released by the afternoon on bail by Senior Magistrate Owen Parkins.

Perkins also refused a request by the artist’s attorney to quash the warrant and warned that he would not tolerate any future disrespect to his court.

During the court proceedings the magistrate reminded the attorney that Beenie Man had ignored a previous warrant last year.

Mr. McBean argued that Beenie Man was abroad last week and missed his flight back to Jamaica, which caused him to miss the court date. The magistrate warned that he would not tolerate any future disrespect to his court.

And in an interview with RJR News, Bennie Man claimed that he was being unfairly targeted by the authorities.

During the brief interview while awaiting bail, Bennie Man became emotional and claimed that he is being targeted by the new government because of his support for the former People's National Party government. The teary eye artiste insisted that he does not owe the government the money assessed and argued that he will be fighting the claim in court.

Beennie Man reiterated that his former management company, Shocking Vibes, was responsible for paying all his taxes.

An arrest warrant was issued for Beenie Man - real name Anthony Moses Davis - last week (24Oct07) after he failed to attend court to answer the charges. The King Of The Dancehall owes the Jamaican revenue department $415,000 (GBP207,500) and a further $246,000 (GBP123,000) in penalties.
