Gunman HiJacks CanJet Plane in Jamaica

At approximately 10:20 pm, Sunday, April 19, a lone gunman forced his way through security check points at the Sangster International Airport and boarded CANJET flight number 918 destined for Halifax, Canada (a chartered flight) with a scheduled stop in Santa Clara, Cuba.

The gunman held hostage members of the crew (eight in total) and 159 passengers who were on board at the time for a short while, before releasing all passengers and two members of the crew. No member of the aircraft's crew or any passengers has been hurt.

Giving an update, Minister Vaz said that the gunman has been identified and negotiations have begun.

"The situation at this time is improving as the father of the gunman, his family and friends are assisting in the process," Minister Vaz told JIS News at 4:30 this morning.

Minister Vaz described the hijacker as a youngster in his 20s who has "mental challenges." He stressed that the situation is not one of international proportions.

CanJet said the incident aboard Flight 918, which carried 182 passengers and crew, occurred after it made a scheduled landing in the Caribbean tourist resort en route from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

"All passengers have been safely removed from the aircraft, but CanJet crew and the armed man remain on board. Our understanding is that no harm has come to anyone remaining on board and ... there has been no damage to the aircraft," the company said in a statement on its website.

"Our priority at this time is well-being of the passengers and crew who were involved in the incident," said the company, which operates a fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft.

Additionally he informed that the Sangster International Airport is continuing with normal operations as the hijacked aircraft has been isolated. Minister of National Security, Senator Dwight Nelson, is also involved in the negotiations at the airport.

Prime Minister Golding rushed to Montego Bay, last night, after giving a press briefing in Kingston at the Norman Manley International Airport, where he and the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper landed following the conclusion of the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago.

Reggae artist Pressure Buss Pipe is preparing to debut yet another single and its accompanying video from his sophomore album, Love and Affection (Don Corleon Records).

Hailing from St. Thomas in the British Virgin Islands, Pressure brings a different flavour to the reggae genre. Sizzla shoots video for 'Show more love to the youths' at Judgement Yard

Sizzla’s Show More Love To The Youths music video on Feed The Children’s exciting Africa rhythm was shot last Friday on locations across August Town and Sandy Park, close to Sizzla’s Judgment Yard. In Show More Love To The Youths, conscious Rastafarian singer Sizzla delivers a deep social commentary about the state of the younger generation. Recorded on the Sly & Robbie created Africa rhythm, the song is definitely worth a good listen and radio-land is making sure of it. The theme of music video looked at stopping crime and violence, taking care of the nation’s youths and supporting ones community. On Friday, during the video shoot, residents of Sizzla’s community came out in their numbers to show their support as video director, Allan ‘Endless’ Tennent, worked his magic.

Directors of Feed The Children Africa label also put on a treat for children in the community, giving away school supplies such as books and pencils. Sizzla also took the time to sign autographs for the children. According to one of the directors, this is the first of several treats the Los Angeles and Jamaica based label will host in various communities across the island. The 16-track Feed The Children Africa compilation album will be official released at the end of May in Jamaica, North America and Europe, and will be distributed by Energy Beat Records. In addition to Sizzla’s Show More Love To The Youths, the album also features Paul Elliot with Same Set Of People, Too Much Blood A Run from Morgan Heritage, Richie Spice with Weh The World Gone, Norris Man delivers Just To See Her Hair, Gyptian with Why, Juice with Bun Dem Up, Hold A Joy by Bescenta; Mama Mi Love So Much from Feed The Children director/producer/artiste Sammo T; What’s Going On from Anthony B; Giving Love by Spanner Banner; Shoot Out by Turbulance; Jah Works from Snatcher Lion, Me and U Inna Business from Natural Black and newcomer Stamma G with his debut How Much Girl Mi Have. Radioland is giving tracks from the label a whole lot of love. Feed The Children Africa will also release a medley video this month featuring Natural Black, Turbulance, Juice, Bescenta, Snatcher Lion, Gyptian and Anthony B. Feed The Children Africa is produced by Raymond Cameron, with Damion Allen as executive producer. source: Technorati Cosmos: related links

Akon signed on to write and produce Whitney Houston’s next album

Akon has signed on to write and produce material for Whitney Houston’s next album. "We haven't actually gone into the studio yet; right now I'm just coming up with a lot of different ideas and directions," Akon tells Billboard.com in an interview conducted before the recent controvery over his onstage dance with teenager Danah Alleyne here in Trinidad. "I just think she needs to come with great songs. I think the music will overcome all the things she's been through." "The voice is there; I don't think anyone could ever take that from her," he continued. "As long as we apply that voice to hit records, she'll be right back where she left off." The Grammy-winning Houston hasn't released new material since 2003's "One Wish: The Holiday Album," and a full set of new songs since "Just Whitney" in 2002. She's been dogged in recent years by drug and health issues -- including rehab stints in 2004 and 2005 -- a legal dispute with her father, John Houston, rumored financial problems and a troubled, and recently ended, marriage to fellow singer Bobby Brown.

Akon says all of that will likely be reflected in the songs, "so people can get a better sense of what that was and the truth. Because it's coming from (Houston), it means a lot more. And then, of course, you just forget about all the trouble, all the negative stuff and just come with happy records, things that warm your heart -- where your life is now, the direction you want to go in." There's no word yet on when Houston's album will come out, but she's working with other producers and songwriters, reportedly including Ne-Yo. Akon, meanwhile, is keeping his plate full with other collaborations, including 50 Cent (who appears on a new version of "Mama Africa" from Akon's latest album, "Konvicted"), Fabolous, T.I., Three 6 Mafia, Bones Thugs-N-Harmony and younger artists on his Konvict Music label. He's also working with Michael Jackson and Elton John but says, "I just can't comment on those." source: Technorati Cosmos: related links
